Digital cameras, USB drives, iPods, mobile phones and laptops are some of the portable devices that have become part and parcel of your life. This has definitely enabled a world of convenience and revolutionized the way you communicate, schedule tasks, work and store data. You no longer need to leave your data behind either at home or office or spent long hours in the dark room developing that prized picture that you can share with your friends.
The other side of the convenience is that it has made you a master in multitasking- discussing strategies while travelling (on the road, at the airport or even while using metros), having discussions with multiple teams simultaneously and so on. In this melee you are prone to lose data as your attention is divided and you end up pressing the wrong button.
A case in point is how a close associate of mine ended up losing irreplaceable photos that would have cost him his job. Being in charge of selecting the best entry for a photography contest, he moved the shortlisted entries to a new folder. In the midst of this he receives a call. Getting back to work after the call he realized that he had deleted the folder. He was confident of retrieving it from the Trash. He soon realized that this was not the case as the folder was not listed in the Trash either. Normally when you delete a folder it should be available in the Trash. However, if the file size is larger than what the Trash could hold, unfortunately as in his case the file cannot be retrieved from Trash.
Recovering photos from Mac
He took the next logical step of searching the internet to recover photos. His search threw up many articles and sites related to photo recovery and data recovery. He ruled out the sites that are not useful through his methodological approach. The recovery software he used enabled him to recover the deleted folder with all the photos intact. For the benefit of the readers and to avoid reinventing the wheel, I list down the parameters he used to identify the software.
Parameters to select Mac Photo recovery software
Operating System- Select a software that is compatible with your operating system. If you are using Mac X.10.4 (Tiger), ensure that the software can recover data from higher versions of Mac as well. This will allow you to use the software even if you upgrade the operating system.
File type- BMP, PNG, TIF, TIFF, JPEG, JPG, GIF and PSD are some of the file extensions used by Mac in storing photos. Make sure that the photo recovery software can recover photos from these entire file extensions. Those of you whose camera supports JPEG as well as Raw format, select the software capable of recovering Raw photos as well. Raw photos will have different extensions based on the camera. For example Canon uses CR2, CRW, Sony- ARW, SR2, Nikon- NEF, Minolta- MRW, Sigma X3F, Pentax- PEF, Olympus- ORF and so on. Make sure you choose the software that supports file recovery from the Raw format used by your camera.
Storage devices- Select the software that can recover photos from a broad range of storage devices such as IDE / ATA / SATA / SCSI hard disk drives, SD Cards, CF Cards, XD Cards, Memory Sticks, external Zip drives, FireWire and USB hard drives.
Data loss scenarios- Since data loss can happen due to deletion or formatting of the volume, SD cards, memory cards, memory sticks and drive, errors while transferring photos from digital camera to hard drive and due to software malfunction, the software should be capable of retrieving photos from any of these scenarios.
Features- Check if the software allows you to preview the files before recovering photos. This feature will allow you to recover photos efficiently.
Evaluate- Always check if the software publisher allows you to evaluate the demo version of the software before buying it. This will give you a firsthand experience about the capability of the software.
